Ethics in Group Representation

Are you representing groups and organizations in your practice? Unsure of how to determine your goals in group representation and uncertain about how best to resolve ethical issues that are arising in your work with your group-clients? In this session, you’ll learn about the key considerations when representing groups or organizations including:

  •  Your client’s decision-making powers;
  •  Key communications considerations;
  • Duties of confidentiality; and
  • Conflicts of interest. 

The session will be interactive and will provide an opportunity for questions and discussion.

About the Faculty

    Marika Dias (Speaker)

    Marika Dias has worked in civil legal services since 2001, with a focus on providing legal services that support community organizing work and grass-roots community groups, in particular in struggles around housing rights, immigrant rights and LGBTQ rights. Marika is currently the Director of the Tenant Rights Coalition at Legal Services NYC, a city-wide tenant rights project utilizing eviction defense, proactive group litigation, and community lawyering strategies to combat displacement and gentrification. Marika also represents Legal Services NYC on the Steering Group of the Right to Counsel NYC Coalition.

    Catherine Barreda (Speaker)

    Catherine Barreda is a deputy director within LSNYC's Tenant Rights Coalition (TRC). The TRC is a partnership between LSNYC and tenant organizing groups working together to prevent the displacement of low income communities of color through tenant-centered and tenant-led advocacy.
