Military Mondays: Child Support - Downward Modifications
The Military Mondays clinic, which launched in August 2016, provides U.S. military veterans with free legal advice regarding VA and Social Security disability benefits, as well as brief advice on housing issues. The Military Mondays clinic is expanding to help veterans pursue child support downward modifications. Child support payments that are set impossibly high are a significant poverty problem, and help no one—including custodial parents and children. In many instances, any child support paid is never seen by children or custodial parents because the state is seeking to recoup poverty-related benefits paid to poor children. Securing realistic child support levels facilitates payments, while allowing many veterans to return to the workforce, including regaining access to drivers and professional licenses. This training by Legal Services NYC provides an overview of the child support law in New York and prepares attorneys to help clients draft petitions for downward modifications of child support orders.
