DVD - The Section 8 Voucher Program and Federally Subsidized Housing Update

In this training, participants will receive an overview of the Section 8 Voucher Program and federally subsidized housing. Faculty will focus on recent developments in these critical and evolving areas. At the end of this session, participants will be able distinguish the various kinds of Section 8 programs, understand the obligations of both tenants and landlords under the different programs, and learn strategies to prevent the termination of subsidies and tenancies.

About the Faculty

    Karen Bacdayan (Speaker)

    Karen May Bacdayan has practiced housing law at Legal Services NYC since 1990. She defends low-income tenants in administrative proceedings and Housing Court as well as being actively involved in affirmative litigation to protect tenants' rights and preserve affordable housing in both Supreme and Federal Court. In addition to her litigation practice, Karen has taught numerous classes for attorneys and lay advocates on a wide variety of housing topics, is a founding member and co-chair of the Brooklyn Tenant Lawyers Network, and serves on the Housing Court and Judiciary Committees of the City Bar Association.

    Sandhya Boyd (Speaker)

    Sandhya Reju Boyd is the Director of Housing at Brooklyn Legal Services. She previously served as the Director of Housing at Manhattan Legal Services (Oct 2013 through August 2015), and the founding Executive Director of Brooklyn Jubilee (May 2006 through November 2013). She was a staff attorney at South Brooklyn Legal Services (2000 through 2007), and the Director of Housing Litigation at Bed-Stuy Legal Services office (2007 to 2009). She has been a poverty lawyer for seventeen years, with a wide range of legal experience including public benefits, bankruptcy, family law and legal assistance to disaster survivors.

    Kathryn Neilson is the Director of the Housing Unit at Bronx Legal Services, where she has worked since 2006. She attended Fordham University School of Law.
