DVD - CLARO Advanced Training - Breaking Leases: The Intersection of Consumer and Housing Law

This training will focus on the recent increase in debt collection cases related to rent arrears.  The goals of the training are 1) to give housing attorneys familiarity with consumer debt law in order to fully understand and minimize consumer consequences for tenants unable to pay rent arrears post-judgment or who move out before a lease ends; and 2) to give consumer attorneys a greater understanding of housing law in order to better defend collection actions. The training will consist of an overview of relevant housing and consumer law; litigation strategies; and the attorney’s ethical obligation to provide the client with the information needed to make an informed decision when a housing court judgment could result in a debt collection action.

    Evan Denerstein (Speaker)

    Evan Denerstein is a Senior Staff Attorney at MFY Legal Services' Consumer Rights Project. The Consumer Rights Project provides advice, counsel, education and representation to low-income individuals on a range of consumer issues, prioritizing direct services to people living on fixed incomes and people with disabilities. Prior to joining MFY, Evan assisted clients on a variety of consumer issues as a Staff Attorney at The Financial Clinic. Evan received his B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley (2004) and his J.D. cum laude from Brooklyn Law School (2010).

    Dora Galacatos (Moderator)

    Senior Counsel to the Feerick Center, is a Fordham Law alumna (1996), with experience working in city government, the not-for-profit sector, and legal services for low-income individuals. Prior to coming to Law School, Dora worked for the New York City Department of Juvenile Justice and the New York City for Mayor's Office of Drug Abuse Policy from 1989 to 1993, where she focused on program development, program evaluation, and policy analysis. As part of a Skadden Fellowship (1997-98), Dora helped establish a family day care network at Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation, in Washington Heights, Manhattan. Dora had served as Staff Director to the New York City Family Homelessness Special Master Panel, working alongside John Feerick. Dora also served as a law clerk to the late-Honorable Milton Pollack (1996-97) and, more recently, to the Honorable Paul A. Crotty (2005-2006), both District Judges in the Southern District of New York. Dora is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in History (1987), and the New School for Social Research, where she was a Kaplan M. Fellow and received a Master of Science in Urban Policy (1993).

    Robert Gruenwald (Speaker)

    Robert Gruenwald is a senior staff attorney at Legal Services NYC-Bronx, where he has worked since 1992. He is a general practice attorney representing Bronx residents in consumer, unemployment, and elder law matters. He serves as a consumer expert at Bronx CLARO. He is also a member of the NYS UI Coalition. In 2013 Robert was presented the Legal Services Award by the New York City Bar Association in recognition of his many years of providing quality civil legal services to the Bronx community.

    Mary McCune (Speaker)

    Mary McCune has worked as a public interest attorney for over twenty years. She is currently a senior staff attorney in the consumer law unit at Manhattan Legal Services, Inc. Over her lengthy career, Ms. McCune has represented low income people in many practice areas, including housing law, family law, benefits law as well as consumer law. She has litigated social justice issues in federal, state and city courts.

    Sateesh Nori (Speaker)

    Sateesh Nori is the Attorney-in-Charge of the Civil Practice's Queens Neighborhood Office - Legal Aid Society, where he manages a team of attorneys, paralegals, and support staff. Mr. Nori was recently appointed to the Mayor's Committee on City Marshals: the committee establishes qualifying criteria for marshal candidates, identifies and recruits candidates, and recommends qualified individuals for appointment by the Mayor. He has written several publications and conducted trainings on Section 8 and housing court and succession rights and the Marriage Equality Act. Mr. Nori graduated from Johns Hopkins University and New York University School of Law.
