Advanced CLARO Training: Assisting CLARO Visitors and Other Consumers with Identity Theft

Identity theft can be emotionally and financially devastating for victims, particularly those who are non-English speaking, economically distressed, working poor, elderly, and / or low income. This training program is geared to volunteer attorneys and law students serving consumers, including at the CLARO and VLFD programs.  The training will provide an overview of identity theft and the legal rights and remedies available to victims to address the damage identity theft causes, including removal and blocking of fraudulent accounts in credit reports.  The training will also provide an overview of credit reports and the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, including the provisions that pertain to addressing erroneous and fraudulent information on credit reports.

About the Faculty

    Dora Galacatos (Speaker)

    Senior Counsel to the Feerick Center, is a Fordham Law alumna (1996), with experience working in city government, the not-for-profit sector, and legal services for low-income individuals. Prior to coming to Law School, Dora worked for the New York City Department of Juvenile Justice and the New York City for Mayor's Office of Drug Abuse Policy from 1989 to 1993, where she focused on program development, program evaluation, and policy analysis. As part of a Skadden Fellowship (1997-98), Dora helped establish a family day care network at Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation, in Washington Heights, Manhattan. Dora had served as Staff Director to the New York City Family Homelessness Special Master Panel, working alongside John Feerick. Dora also served as a law clerk to the late-Honorable Milton Pollack (1996-97) and, more recently, to the Honorable Paul A. Crotty (2005-2006), both District Judges in the Southern District of New York. Dora is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in History (1987), and the New School for Social Research, where she was a Kaplan M. Fellow and received a Master of Science in Urban Policy (1993).

    Ariana Lindermayer (Speaker)

    Ariana Lindermayer is a staff attorney at MFY Legal Services, Inc., working with the Consumer Rights Project. The Consumer Rights Project provides advice and representation to low-income New Yorkers on issues of consumer debt and financial fraud. She is a graduate of Fordham University School of Law and clerked for the Honorable Paul A. Crotty on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and the Honorable Maryanne Trump Barry on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

    Susan Shin (Speaker)

    Susan Shin is the Legal Director at New Economy Project, where she directs the organization's legal strategies, including its direct legal services to low-income New Yorkers and community groups and impact litigation that challenges Wall Street corporations and advances economic justice in NYC communities of color. She was named as one of City & State New York's 2024 Trailblazers in Law and is a recipient of the Legal Services Award from the New York City Bar Association, the Rising Star Award from the Partners Council of the National Consumer Law Center, the Consumer Advocate Award from the National Association of Consumer Advocates, and an award from the Civil Legal Advice and Referral Office (CLARO) for outstanding service and dedication to helping New Yorkers in need of legal assistance. Susan was previously a Skadden Fellow and Staff Attorney with The Legal Aid Society in New York City. She is a graduate of New York University School of Law, where she was an Arthur Garfield Hays Civil Liberties Fellow, and a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College. She is admitted to practice in New York, the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals
